Are you worried about the coronavirus and you are currently pregnant?
Well there actually is good news for you. According to ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), although there is not a lot of research yet on the novel coronavirus, it seems that pregnant women are not at an increased risk and there does not seems to be any harm to fetuses born to mothers who tested positive. The Lancet published a small study looking at the possible transmission of the virus through the placenta or through breast milk. The results of the study showed no increase in incidences of pneumonia or respiratory distress in the mother or the infant. And the breast milk tested negative. All the babies were born viable and healthy. This study was very small but at least can help to alleviate any immediate fears of this virus. The transmission to infants came later from direct contact in caring for the infants but even then, did not cause severe pneumonia or respiratory problems.
So, in short, keep washing your hands and contact your doctor or midwife if you think you might have the novel coronavirus or if you are experience a high fever or any breathing difficulties.
